SmartThings: documented Matter and Thread support
What Samsung's SmartThings support documentation states about Matter transports, which hubs carry a Thread border router, and sharing devices across platforms.
How we know this: our findings are based on published manufacturer specifications, certification records, and other cited sources. We have not personally used or tested these products. How we research.
| Capability | Status | What the vendor documents | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Supported | Samsung documents its SmartThings hubs as Matter controllers; the 2015 hub supports Matter devices over Wi-Fi/LAN, and setup selects the Wi-Fi or Thread network. | Samsung SmartThings | |
| Matter over Thread | Supported | Thread devices need a Matter controller that includes a Thread border router: the SmartThings 2018 Hub or Aeotec Smart Home Hub, or a third-party border router with the 2015 hub. | Samsung SmartThings | |
| Built-in border router | Supported | Documented for the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub. Not established for SmartThings Station or Samsung TVs with a built-in hub. | Samsung SmartThings | |
| Multi-admin sharing | Supported | Samsung documents sharing a Matter device from SmartThings to other platforms and adding one set up elsewhere. Each device can connect to at most 5 services. | Samsung SmartThings |
Every cell in this entry rests on one Samsung support article, SmartThings x Matter Integration, last updated by Samsung on 31 March 2025. It is the only Samsung page found that says which hubs do what, rather than listing Matter and Thread as logos.
Transports
The article describes Samsung’s hubs as Matter controllers. It states that the SmartThings 2015 Hub (STH-ETH and others) supports Matter devices using Wi-Fi or LAN connections but does not contain a Thread router, and its setup steps have you select the Wi-Fi or Thread network when needed. Thread devices, it says, need a Matter controller that includes a Thread border router.
Thread border routers
The same article names the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as the Samsung Matter controllers for Thread “at the time of posting”. A 2015 hub needs a third-party border router on the same network.
That list is older than the SmartThings Station and than Samsung’s TVs, monitors and refrigerators with a built-in hub. Samsung’s SmartThings hubs page says Samsung TVs of a given tier and model year include a built-in SmartThings Hub that supports Matter, Thread and Zigbee technologies. Listing Thread is not the same statement as acting as a Thread border router, so this entry does not claim it for those devices.
Multi-admin
The article states that, using multi-admin, Matter devices onboarded in the SmartThings app can be connected to other smart home platforms while they stay connected in SmartThings, through Share with other services. A device set up in another platform’s app can also be shared to SmartThings. Samsung notes one limit: each device can only be connected to 5 different services.
