How to tell us about copyrighted material on this site, and what happens next.

Our position

We respect copyright and we expect the same of everyone else. If something on CompatGrid infringes your copyright, tell us and we will look at it properly. In most cases a plain email describing the problem gets it resolved faster than a formal notice does — but the formal route is below if you want it.

This site publishes its own research. It does not host user uploads, and it does not re-host product images from retailers. If we have used something we should not have, it is a mistake rather than a policy, and we would like to fix it.

Designated agent

Send copyright notices to [email protected], or by post to 100 Riverfront Dr., Apt. 1901, Detroit, MI 48226, marked for the attention of the copyright agent.

TODO(owner): this site does not currently accept comments or any other user-submitted content, so no agent has been registered with the US Copyright Office. If comments, user reviews, a forum, or guest submissions are ever enabled, register a designated agent in the DMCA Designated Agent Directory ($6), put the registered agent's name and details in this section, and set a calendar reminder to renew before the three-year expiry. Without a registered agent, the §512(c) safe harbour is not available at all.

Sending a takedown notice

To be effective under 17 U.S.C. §512(c)(3), a notice must be in writing and include all six of the following. Missing elements will delay things, so please include them all:

  1. A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner, or someone authorised to act for them.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed. If several works on one page, a representative list is fine.
  3. Identification of the material you say is infringing, with enough detail for us to find it — the full URL of the page, and where on the page.
  4. Your contact details: name, postal address, telephone number, and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on the owner's behalf.

A word of caution, not a threat: under §512(f), knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing can make you liable for damages and legal costs. Courts have also held that a sender must consider fair use in good faith before sending a notice. Please make sure you actually hold the rights you are asserting.

What we do when we receive one

  1. We acknowledge receipt, normally within five business days.
  2. We remove or disable access to the material identified, if the notice is valid on its face.
  3. If the material was submitted by someone else, we notify them and pass on a copy of the notice.
  4. We keep a record of the notice and what we did about it.

Counter-notice

If your material was removed and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you can send a counter-notice under §512(g)(3). It must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address, and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the district where you live (or, if you are outside the United States, any district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice.

We will forward your counter-notice to the original complainant. If they do not file a court action seeking to restrain the material within 10 to 14 business days, we may restore it.

Send counter-notices to the same address as notices.

Repeat infringers

We terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the access of anyone who repeatedly infringes copyright. As there are currently no user accounts on this site, this policy is stated for completeness and will take practical effect if user contributions are ever enabled.
