Terms of Service
The terms you agree to by using this site. Short, because there is not much to agree to.
1. Who these terms are with
These terms are an agreement between you and MakhoolDesigns L.L.C., which operates CompatGrid at https://compatgrid.com ("we", "us"). By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the site.
You must be at least 13 years old to use this site, and at least 18 to contact us on behalf of a business.
2. What this site is
CompatGrid publishes research about Matter and Thread smart-home device compatibility, compiled from published specifications and other cited sources. It is general information for a general audience.
It is not professional advice. It is not electrical, engineering, security, or installation advice, and it is not a substitute for a manufacturer's own documentation or for a qualified installer. Read the manual, follow local electrical and building codes, and hire a professional for anything mains-wired.
Our findings are based on documented specifications, not on hands-on testing. What that means in practice — including what it cannot tell you — is set out on the Editorial Policy page, and we would rather you read that page than assume.
3. Accuracy, and the absence of a warranty
We work from published sources and we cite them, but specifications change, firmware changes what a device can do, vendors update documentation without notice, and sources are sometimes wrong.
The site and everything on it is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components.
Check anything that matters against the manufacturer before you buy. If a purchase depends on a specific capability, confirm it with the vendor.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here limits any non-waivable statutory rights you have as a consumer.
4. Our content, and what you may do with it
The text, layout, compilation, design, and code of this site are ours or our licensors', and are protected by copyright and other laws. Product names and trademarks belong to their respective owners; we use them descriptively and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by those companies unless a page says so.
You may:
- read, print, and share pages for personal, non-commercial use;
- quote short excerpts with attribution and a link back.
You may not:
- republish substantial parts of the site, in any medium;
- scrape, harvest, or bulk-download the site, or use automated means to extract its data at scale;
- use the content to train a machine-learning model without our written permission;
- remove or obscure attributions, disclosures, or copyright notices; or
- present the content as your own or in a way that implies we endorse you.

5. Links to other sites
This site links to retailers, manufacturers, standards bodies, and other publishers. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, availability, or practices, and a link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it. Their terms and privacy policies govern your use of them, not ours.
Some of those links are affiliate links that earn us a commission — see the Affiliate Disclosure. Any purchase you make is a contract between you and that retailer. We are not a party to it and we have no involvement in fulfilment, returns, warranty, or support.
6. Advertising
The site carries display advertising. We do not select individual ads, and an ad appearing here is not an endorsement. What the advertising system collects, and how to turn personalisation off, is in the Privacy Policy.
7. How you may use the site
Do not:
- break the site, or try to;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of it or to any connected system;
- send automated traffic that degrades service for other people, or ignore
robots.txt; - interact with advertising in bad faith — clicking your own or anyone else's ads artificially, or encouraging others to. Invalid traffic can get this site's advertising account permanently terminated, so we take it seriously; or
- use the site for anything unlawful.
We may restrict or block access if you do any of the above, without notice.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or lost savings, arising out of your use of or inability to use the site — including any purchase you make through a link here, and including any reliance on information on the site.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of these terms or the site is limited to US $100.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
9. Indemnity
If your misuse of this site — breaching these terms or the law — causes a third-party claim against us, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of defending it. This does not apply to ordinary reading of the site, which is what it is for.
10. Privacy and copyright
How we handle personal data is in the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Policy. How to report copyright infringement is in the DMCA and Copyright Policy. Both are part of these terms.
11. Changes
We may change these terms. The "last updated" date at the top of the page shows the current version, and for material changes we will say so on the site. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms. Changes are not retroactive.
12. Availability
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the site at any time. We do not promise to keep any particular page online, though we would rather correct a page than remove it — see the Editorial Policy.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, and of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The courts located in that state have exclusive jurisdiction, except where the mandatory law of your country of residence gives you the right to bring proceedings in your local courts.
TODO(owner) ⚖️: confirm the state and venue with counsel, and decide with them whether an arbitration clause is worth adding. The reasoning for leaving it out is in the comment at the top of this file.
14. General
If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. Our not enforcing a provision is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the policies linked from them, are the entire agreement between us about the site.
