Home Assistant: documented Matter and Thread support
What the Home Assistant Matter and Thread integration pages state about transports, the hardware a border router needs, and joining a device to several controllers.
How we know this: our findings are based on published manufacturer specifications, certification records, and other cited sources. We have not personally used or tested these products. How we research.
| Capability | Status | What the vendor documents | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Supported | The Matter integration documents control of Matter devices on a local Wi-Fi or Thread network. | Home Assistant | |
| Matter over Thread | Supported | Same page; it adds that a Thread device needs a Thread border router near it. | Home Assistant | |
| Built-in border router | Partial | Conditional. Requires a Thread-capable radio such as Home Assistant Yellow or Connect ZBT-1, plus the OpenThread Border Router add-on. Not present in a bare install. | Home Assistant | |
| Multi-admin sharing | Supported | The Matter integration documents joining the same device to multiple controllers, naming Google Home, Apple Home and Home Assistant simultaneously. | Home Assistant |
Home Assistant documents its own limits more plainly than the platform vendors do, which makes it the easiest row in this matrix to source and the only one carrying a conditional cell.
Transports
The Matter integration page states that the integration allows control of Matter devices on a local Wi-Fi or Thread network, and that adding a Thread-based Matter device requires a Thread border router near the device.
Border router: conditional, not built in
The Thread integration page sets two conditions. The installation needs a device with a Thread-capable radio, such as Home Assistant Yellow, Connect ZBT-1 or Connect ZBT-2, and the OpenThread Border Router add-on must be installed. A Home Assistant instance running on hardware without an 802.15.4 radio is not a border router, so the cell is marked partial rather than supported. It is also not accurate to call this a bridge: the software becomes the border router once the radio exists.
Multi-admin
The Matter integration page states that the same device can be joined to multiple controllers, giving simultaneous addition to Google Home, Apple Home and Home Assistant as the example. Along with Alexa, this is one of the two multi-admin cells in the matrix backed by a published sentence.
