Google Home: documented Matter and Thread support
What Google's developer and help documentation states about Matter transports, which Nest devices act as hubs and Thread border routers, and multi-admin.
How we know this: our findings are based on published manufacturer specifications, certification records, and other cited sources. We have not personally used or tested these products. How we research.
| Capability | Status | What the vendor documents | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Supported | Google states that Matter devices use a supported network layer technology like Wi-Fi or Thread. | ||
| Matter over Thread | Supported | The same Google overview names Thread alongside Wi-Fi as a supported network layer. | ||
| Built-in border router | Supported | Google lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Nest Wifi Pro as Thread border routers among its Matter hubs. | ||
| Multi-admin sharing | Supported | Google documents sharing a device from Google Home to other Matter apps (Linked Matter apps & services) and adding one set up in another app. Each app needs its own Matter hub. |
Google publishes most of the useful detail in its developer documentation, and its consumer help pages do not always agree on device names. The transport and border router cells cite the developer pages; multi-admin cites the Google Home help page, which is where Google documents the sharing flow.
Transports
The Matter overview states that a Matter device uses a supported network layer technology like Wi-Fi or Thread. It also notes that nearly every Google Nest speaker, hub and Wi-Fi system natively supports Matter devices for local connectivity and control.
Thread border routers
Google’s supported devices list enumerates the Nest hardware that functions as a Matter hub, and separately marks which of those units carry Thread border router capability: Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Nest Wifi Pro. Older Nest speakers appear on the hub list without the border router marking.
Multi-admin
Google’s help page Set up, manage, and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home states that the Matter Multi-Admin feature lets you use Matter-enabled devices simultaneously in different Matter-certified apps, naming Google Home, Apple Home and Amazon Alexa. A device in Google Home is shared from its settings under Linked Matter apps & services, or with a temporary pairing code or QR code. A device first set up in its manufacturer’s app can also be added to Google Home. The condition Google states: you need one Matter-certified hub for each Matter-certified app that controls the device.
