Apple Home: documented Matter and Thread support
What Apple's own published documentation states about Matter transports, Thread-enabled home hubs, and sharing accessories with other ecosystems.
How we know this: our findings are based on published manufacturer specifications, certification records, and other cited sources. We have not personally used or tested these products. How we research.
| Capability | Status | What the vendor documents | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Supported | Apple documents provisioning an accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread, as appropriate, during setup. | Apple | |
| Matter over Thread | Supported | The same Apple provisioning documentation names Thread alongside Wi-Fi. | Apple | |
| Built-in border router | Supported | Apple names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled home hubs. Of the current Apple TV 4K, only the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model lists Thread; the Wi-Fi model does not. | Apple, Apple | |
| Multi-admin sharing | Supported | Apple documents adding a Matter accessory already paired with another app to Apple Home, and adding an accessory paired in Apple Home to a third-party Matter app. | Apple |
Apple publishes its Matter position across developer documentation and product specification pages rather than in one compatibility table, so each cell in the matrix above cites the page that carries the sentence it rests on.
Transports
Apple’s Matter developer documentation describes setup as scanning a code, after which iPhone provisions the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. That sentence is what both transport cells rest on. Apple does not publish a separate per-transport capability list, and this entry does not invent one.
Thread border routers
The HomePod mini specification carries the clearest statement: Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini, or a third-party Thread border router. The Apple TV 4K specification repeats the same footnote, but lists Thread networking technology only for the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The Wi-Fi model’s connectivity list has no Thread, so that model is not a Thread border router.
Multi-admin
Apple’s support article Pair and manage your Matter accessories states that you can add Matter accessories that were previously paired with other apps from any app that supports the Matter standard. It documents both directions: in the Home app, an accessory previously paired to another app is added through More options; to add an accessory from Apple Home to a third-party Matter app, you follow that manufacturer’s instructions to add a new accessory and select the previously paired one. The same article repeats that Thread-based accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router.
