Amazon Alexa: documented Matter and Thread support
What Amazon's Alexa smart home developer documentation states about Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread, Echo Thread border routers, and Matter multi-admin.
How we know this: our findings are based on published manufacturer specifications, certification records, and other cited sources. We have not personally used or tested these products. How we research.
| Capability | Status | What the vendor documents | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Supported | Amazon states that compatible Echo devices support smart home devices connected using Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. | Amazon | |
| Matter over Thread | Supported | Named explicitly in the same sentence as Matter over Wi-Fi. | Amazon | |
| Built-in border router | Supported | Amazon lists Echo (4th Gen) with a Thread 1.1 border router, and Echo Hub, Echo Studio, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and further models with Thread 1.3. | Amazon | |
| Multi-admin sharing | Supported | Amazon documents the Matter Multi-Admin feature for connecting a device to multiple smart home platforms, including Alexa. | Amazon |
Alexa is the one ecosystem in this matrix whose four cells all trace to a single page: Amazon’s Alexa smart home Matter support documentation, which covers transports, per-model Thread versions and multi-admin in one place. Its URL is recorded in this entry’s source list and on every cell above.
The link is deliberately not rendered inline here. Any URL on an Amazon domain
is treated by this site’s link gate as a monetised destination requiring a
disclosure and rel="sponsored nofollow", and a developer documentation page is
neither. Failing closed on that check and citing the page by name is the correct
outcome, not a workaround.
Transports and the controller role
Amazon states that Matter-compatible Echo devices support smart home devices connected using Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread, and describes the Echo as the Matter administrator used to discover and connect Matter devices to Alexa locally.
Thread border routers, by model and version
The same page separates Thread versions by hardware generation, which matters more than the presence of a radio: Echo (4th Gen) is listed at Thread 1.1, while Echo Hub, Echo Studio, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and several newer models are listed at Thread 1.3. Amazon also lists eero router models carrying Thread 1.3 border routers.
Multi-admin
Amazon documents the Matter Multi-Admin feature as the way to connect a device to multiple smart home platforms, including Alexa. Alexa and Home Assistant are the two ecosystems in this matrix whose multi-admin cell rests on a published sentence rather than an inference.
